In a development seemingly lifted from the first act of a straight-to-DVD Steven Seagal classic, exiled St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has set out on a journey of self.
Williams is using his time away from the NFL as "a mission of personal growth and discovery," friends told CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.
Starting next week, Williams will travel to the remote villages of rural Northern Thailand, millions of figurative miles from ground zero of the New Orleans Saints' "bounty" scandal.
According to La Canfora, Williams has spent the summer "quietly working with various high school and college programs, going around the country to lend a hand."
Now, he sets his sights on more worldly endeavors after a lifetime spent on football fields and in meeting rooms. He will visit four tribes in Thailand's opium emporia known as the "Golden Triangle."
From there, Williams will backpack through Burma and Laos before returning stateside to enroll in military boot camp. Once he's taken in the "training camp experience," he'll travel to South Africa and work his way north through that continent.
Williams didn't appeal his suspension, which will last at least a year and perhaps longer. It doesn't sound like he's at a loss as to how to pass the time.
