The Indianapolis Colts are hoping for the best and bracing for the worst when it comes to Ahmad Bradshaw.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Bradshaw faces the possibility of neck surgery for the injury Bradshaw suffered in Week 3, per a source informed of the injury.
The team should know in a few days if Bradshaw will need surgery that, if done, likely would end the running back's season, Rapoport reported. The Colts hope the injury heals on its own, and Bradshaw still is getting medical opinions, including that of Dr. Robert Watkins.
The Indianapolis Star first reported the news.
"I'm planning on him being around," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Wednesday, via The Star. "Certainly he won't be at practice. We've made some adjustments for that.
"Once we get some feedback, once we get some answers, then we'll know more."
The Colts already have lost running back Vick Ballard, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last month. Bradshaw's uncertain future makes the Trent Richardson acquisition even more important.
When healthy, Bradshaw is a versatile playmaker with strong blocking skills. He's not healthy right now, a recurring theme during his NFL career.
