Eastern Michigan football player Demarius Reed was found shot to death in what is being investigated as a homicide, according to a release from the school.
Reed was killed off campus in the 700 block of West Clark Road, and his body was discovered Friday shortly after 7 a.m. According to the Ann Arbor News, Reed was found in the hallway of an apartment building. The cause of death was a gunshot wound, per the report.
Local authorities were working in conjunction with EMU police in the investigation.
A junior who starred at Simeon High School in Chicago, Reed was a starting wide receiver with 15 receptions for 185 yards and a touchdown on the season.
The school announced that Saturday's home game against Ohio is still scheduled to be played at 1 p.m. ET.
Eastern Michigan Athletic Director Heather Lyke, President Susan Martin and Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher released a joint statement to express their condolences:
"The Eastern Michigan University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is extending its deepest condolences to the family, friends and teammates following the passing of Demarius Reed, a junior student-athlete on the football team.
"EMU grief counselors have been meeting with and supporting the team, fellow students, faculty and staff."
UPDATE: The Ypsilanti police department said in a release that robbery is a possible motive in the case, but no suspect is in custody. Police said results of an autopsy on Reed will not be available for some time.
