New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick took the blame Monday for Chris Jones' penalty, admitting he was wrong when he said after Sunday's 30-27 overtime loss to the New York Jets that his team didn't commit a penalty.
"On the field-goal play at the end, Chris is obviously trying to do the right thing by stepping up and taking responsibility," Belichick told reporters Monday. "But that's not his responsibility, it's ours. We just have to do a better job of coaching that. It's not his fault, that's on me (and) the coaching staff."

Jones was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct for pushing a teammate into the offensive formation during Jets kicker Nick Folk's missed 56-yard field-goal attempt. The penalty gave the Jets new life, and Folk kicked the winning field goal four plays later.
The admission from Belichick is a reversal from his defiant stance on Sunday. Belichick admitted Monday he misinterpreted the rule and coached his players to make that play.
"Obviously we are wrong," he said. "It's our job to understand the rules. Whatever the bottom line is, we didn't do it properly."
The Patriots used the tactic the prior week against the Saints, and no penalty was called.
For those wondering why the Patriots weren't given a warning about the new rule, Newsday passed along word that Jets offensive lineman Willie Colon said he overheard referees warning Patriots players on the previous field-goal attempt about the pushing.
This one is on Belichick, and he took the blame Monday.
