Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley remains in the hospital, but he continues to improve following his neck injury suffered Sunday. His football future remains an open question.
"Jermichael is still seeking opinions from specialists. He's doing better each and every day," coach Mike McCarthy said.
Multiple reports say Finley suffered a bruised spinal cord. There are conflicting reports about whether or not that would require surgery. And ESPN's Ed Werder reported Wednesday that Finley is expected to be released from the hospital on Thursday.
McCarthy said he has not sat down with general manager Ted Thompson to discuss Finley's immediate future and status with the team. Based on that comment, placing Finley on season-ending injured reserve is at least an option for the Packers. There have been some suggestions that Finley's career might be in question, but it's far too early to know that.
"We're going to wait until everything comes in," McCarthy said about Finley and his test results. "We'll do our due diligence and, obviously, not be premature on anything. We'll do what's in the best interest of Jermichael."
In the meantime, Finley officially is listed as out this week against the Minnesota Vikings. With Randall Cobb also sidelined, McCarthy figures to lean on the running game more than usual this season.
