A lot of things have gone right for the Buffalo Bills this year. The defense is vastly improved under coordinator Mike Pettine. The offense is more creative and competitive even with backup quarterback Thad Lewis at the helm.
But running back C.J. Spiller's struggles are one black mark on new coach Doug Marrone. The team has struggled to get Spiller the ball in space, and he just hasn't looked like the same player. A nagging ankle in recent weeks could be a factor.
Marrone is thinking out loud about sitting Spiller this week against the New Orleans Saints, even though Spiller was able to finish last week's matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Spiller has sat out the last two practices.
"He wants to go, but we've got to make good decisions," Marrone said, via the Bills' official website. "He doesn't feel as good in my opinion."
Spiller wants to play, but understands a week off could do him well. He's unable to make people miss in the open field.
"Concerning my injury I think we're both on the same page," Spiller said. "(Marrone) wants what's best for me and also what's best for the team."
Fantasy owners don't want to hear it, but what's best might be a week off. It sounds like Marrone will sit Spiller. Annually underrated running back Fred Jackson has shown he can handle the workload in the meantime.
