Putting up 33 tackles, 10 tackles for loss with two sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in seven games is fantastic production, especially for an interior lineman.
For Kerry Hyder of unbeaten Texas Tech, however, those totals pale in comparison to the plays he hasn't finished off.
"I feel like I could have already hit my numbers that I hit last year," Hyder told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "I'm actually disappointed right now in my play so far. I feel like I can do much better in the second part of the season."
Hyder has been the anchor of an improved Red Raiders defense that is allowing 18.7 points per game, with the 6-foot-2, 280-pound senior continuing to show a knack for getting into the backfield.
Hyder ranks second in the Big 12 in tackles for loss this season and has 28 stops behind the line of scrimmage in his last 20 games, a total made all the more impressive considering the wide-open spread offenses seen across the conference.
"The thing I like about Kerry is he's so (quick-twitch), and he feels things," Texas Tech defensive line coach John Scott said. "He's able to see it before it happens sometimes, just anticipate, and that's what you want in a defensive lineman."
Facing an Oklahoma team this week that has struggled to throw the ball consistently, Hyder's disruptive play will be even more important to disrupt a multi-faceted rushing attack that may use three running backs and quarterback Blake Bell.
The Sooners' strength is in the interior of the offensive line with All-America center Gabe Ikard and solid guards Bronson Irwin and Adam Shead, so Hyder will be at the heart of the action, but Texas Tech has also been willing to use him in different spots up front.
What is certain is Hyder will have to live up to his own expectations for Texas Tech to remain in the conference championship chase.
