The attorney for Florida State QB Jameis Winston said at a Thursday news conference that he was not surprised his client's DNA matched that of a sample taken from the complainant in a sexual-assault case.
Tim Jansen, a Tallahassee attorney representing Winston in the case, also said sex between his client and the complainant was consensual.
"We are not surprised with the results of the DNA," Jansen said during the news conference. "We voluntarily submitted to a DNA test; the only thing we are surprised by is it was leaked out by law enforcement.
"The question the people should ask is why is it being leaked. For what purpose?"
Jansen held the news conference in response to an ESPN report early Thursday that DNA taken from the complainant matched Winston's DNA. Jensen said Winston submitted to a DNA swab last Thursday.
"I don't think it's a secret what the defense is when I tell you that we are not surprised his DNA was found," Jansen said. "We anticipated it would be found. We never, ever said he wasn't there."
Florida Department of Law Enforcement commissioner Gerald Bailey told the Tallahassee Democrat on Thursday morning that his agency conducted the DNA-matching test and forwarded the results to Tallahassee police and Leon County State Attorney Willie Meggs.
Second-ranked Florida State hosts Idaho on Saturday. Winston is expected to start.
