The New York Jets will stick with what is not working at quarterback.
Geno Smith was informed by quarterbacks coach David Lee on Monday that he will remain the starter, the struggling rookie told reporters.
The news was confirmed by veteran backup David Garrard, who said the quarterback decision was "just kind of status quo."
It's an apt description of the coaching staff's conundrum, forced to choose between the lesser of three evils.
With his job on the line, coach Rex Ryan has decided that the first quarterback in the history of the QBR stat to have four sub-5.0s in one season is a better option than Matt Simms or Garrard.
"I believe in Geno," Ryan said, per Newsday. "I think he has the tools to be a good quarterback in this league."
Smith has gotten progressively more inept over the past four weeks, holding the rest of the team hostage.
How bad has it gotten for Smith? According to numbers compiled by Reuben Frank of CSN Philly, Nick Foles still would have a higher passer rating than Smith if he threw an interception on his next 50 (!) pass attempts.
Due to a preseason deal struck on the "Around The League Podcast," I have agreed to eat my softball pants if the Oakland Raiders win six games this season. As you might imagine, I'm less than thrilled with the prospect of Smith defending the pants against the Raiders this week.
I've seen what Smith has to offer. Give me the devil I don't know.
