As Johnny Manziel continues to suggest he has yet to make up his mind about whether to turn pro or return to college, other indicators are suggesting otherwise. One of those came in the form of a tweet from attorney Darren Heitner, who operates a blog for sports agents.
Insidetheleague.com is a premium web site. There was nothing on its front page as of Friday afternoon about Manziel's potential choice of agent. According to Heitner's blog, the agency placed eight clients in last year's NFL draft, including first-round pick DJ Hayden, a defensive back from the University of Houston chosen by the Raiders at No. 12 overall.
Manziel signing with Select Sports Group would make some sense given the agency's apparent focus on Texas-based talent. Along with Hayden, SSG reportedly also signed 2013 draftees Vance McDonald of Rice and Terrance Williams of Baylor.
Once an NCAA underclassman signs with an agent, his college eligibility is forfeited.
Manziel has said this week in multiple interviews that he plans to discuss the possibility of early NFL draft entry with his family and several of his coaches before making a decision.
Earlier on the Dan Patrick radio show, he suggested that anything less than a first-round draft grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board would likely compel him to return to Texas A&M for another year. Manziel has two more years of college eligibility remaining.
