Texas A&M third-year sophomore will enter the NFL draft and forego two seasons of college eligibility, according to a release by the school.
"After talking things over with Coach Sumlin and my family I have decided to enter the NFL draft," Evans said. "Thanks go to Texas A&M for giving me an opportunity to play college football. Thanks also to my coaches and teammates for helping me develop as a player and as a man."
Evans was virtually unstoppable as a sophomore in 2013, amassing a school-record 1,394 receiving yards on 69 receptions, for 12 touchdowns. At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, he is an imposing figure for cornerbacks, particularly in the red zone, where he can use his size to corral lob throws. His 151 career receptions rank fifth in school history despite the fact he played for just two years.
Said Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin: "It's been a pleasure watching Mike's development as a receiver and a person the past two seasons. Mike was one of the team's hardest workers in whatever he was doing, and it paid off for him on the field. I think one of the highest compliments you can say about Mike is that he plays as hard when he doesn't have the ball in his hands as when he does."
The decision was first reported by NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt, who also said Aggies star quarterback Johnny Manziel's college days would come to a close this year, as well. Evans had told College Football 24/7 that his announcement would come quickly after the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Evans' entry into the draft deepens a position that could get even deeper with pending decisions from underclassmen at the same position, such as LSU's Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry. Landry is expected to announce his decision Friday.
