The Texanshave released two-time Pro Bowl tight end Owen Daniels, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. The Texans made the move official Tuesday afternoon.
Daniels broke his leg last year and was scheduled to count $6.25 million in cap space in 2014. This news will save Houston $4.5 million.
As of Monday, Daniels had no idea if he would be released. He expressed being open to restructuring his contract, but the Texans clearly wanted to go in a new direction.
Perhaps that direction will be from their own roster. The team could re-sign Garrett Graham, who narrowly cracks our Top 101 free agent list.
Daniels was a steady player for Houston over the past eight seasons, with five campaigns of more than 500 yards. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him land with Gary Kubiak in Baltimore as a backup to Ravens starter Dennis Pitta.
