The Carolina Panthers made it through free agency, the NFL draft and even the undrafted free agent period without addressing the need at offensive tackle.
On Thursday, however, they took one step toward finding some semblance of help in replacing the retired Jordan Gross on Cam Newton's blind side.
The team worked out veteran offensive tackle J'Marcus Webb, according to The Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson. Webb did not immediately sign with Carolina.
Webb also reportedly visited the Minnesota Vikings.
The 25-year-old tackle spent 2013 with the Vikings after being cut by the Chicago Bears. Webb played just 108 snaps while appearing in eight games in Minnesota, starting one.
The seventh-round pick spent three seasons in Chicago -- the last two as the full-time starter. However, he often struggled to protect Jay Cutler's back. Pro Football Focus ranked Webb the 50th-rated offensive tackle in his last full season.
Regardless of Webb's flaws, the visit underscores the Panthers' need on the offensive line. Newton, coming off ankle surgery, is slated to have Byron Bell -- a mediocre right tackle last season -- on his left side when the season opens.
