When Michael Vicksigned a one-year, $5 million deal with the New York Jets in March, it's hard to believe he did so with his eyes on a backup job.
After all, Geno Smith struggled with Gang Green after a training camp battle with Mark Sanchez, and it was expected the incumbent would compete with Vick for the starting signal-caller job.
But recent comments from the Jets' coaching staff have suggested Vick is simply a safety net for the 2013 second-round pick, and even Vick has changed his tune, saying that it's Geno's job to lose.
On Thursday, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg went a step further and confirmed what's been clear for weeks: there won't be a true QB competition in Gotham this summer.
"There is competition," Mornhinweg said, via NJ.com. "Now, it may not quite be like the competition we had last year where everything was 50-50. We're trying to continue the progression with Geno, and then have Mike ready to go. It's just that simple, and Mike knows the exact expectations and roles that he has, and Geno knows the exact expectations."
Vick won his battle with Nick Foles last year before succumbing to the 2013 breakout player after he injured his hamstring during the season. Vick and Sanchez have now traded places, and it appears neither veteran will have a shot at starting barring injury.
