The New York Giantswaived safety Will Hill on Monday just three days after the NFL suspended him for six games.
On Friday, the 24-year-old Hill was suspended without pay for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. It was the third time Hill was suspended by the NFL since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Hill served a four-game ban in 2012 for performance-enhancing drug use. He then missed the first four games of the 2013 campaign for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.
Despite Hill's stellar on-field play, the third strike was enough for the Giants to cut ties with the playmaking safety.
Reporters speculated following the suspension announcement that New York would sever ties with Hill. Tom Rock of Newsday noted that the organization had "put a lot of time and energy" into keeping the safety clean.
Hill was the Giants' best defensive back in 2013, but it wasn't enough for him to keep his job after the latest transgression.
Talented players usually get second, third and fourth opportunities in the NFL. However, Hill already used three of his chances up in New York. It remains to be seen if another team is willing to take a chance on his talent while citing a "change of scenery" being good for the New Jersey native.
