Jason Babin is parting ways with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the second time in just over three months.
On Thursday morning the team announced that it released the veteran defensive end.
Babin voided the final two years of his contract in March, but just three days later he signed an incentive-laden, three-year contract to rejoin the team.
The 34-year-old was coming off a productive, 7.5-sack season in 2013, but with younger players emerging in a crowded "Leo" position, the team decided to move on.
The Jaguars will move forward with Andre Branch, Ryan Davis and Chris Smith fighting to earn more playing time.
The release comes as a mini-surprise, but the Jags did Babin a small favor by not waiting to cut him. The mid-June release gives the vet time to catch on with another team before the beginning of training camps in July. Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union reported that coach Gus Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell met with the veteran Thursday morning to inform him of his release.
With the arrow pointing up on the Jags beyond 2014, Bradley and Caldwell are likely to give several more youngsters a chance to sink or swim this season.
