Baylor football is enjoying unprecedented heights, and former Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III -- the key player in the program's ascension -- is going to be immortalized with a statue outside the school's new stadium.
McLane Stadium, which will seat 45,000, opens Aug. 31, when Baylor plays host to SMU, and a statue of Griffin -- who won the Heisman in 2011 and now plays for the Washington Redskins -- will be unveiled outside the stadium the same day.
Griffin's pose won't be known until the unveiling, FoxSports.com reported; it also reported that the statue will be accompanied by panels displaying photos of Griffin while he was in school.
FoxSports reported that photos of Griffin wearing a Baylor uniform were taken in Washington, D.C., in April; Griffin then chose his favorite photos and Baylor officials picked among those to select the pose.
Griffin guided Baylor to a 10-win season in 2011; it was just the second time in school history the Bears had won 10 games. Baylor is coming off a school-record 11-win season, and its current streak of four consecutive winning seasons is the best run at the school since 1985-88; the Bears have had five consecutive winning seasons just once in school history. In addition, Baylor has won 36 games in the past four seasons, the most in any four-year stretch in program history.
