Washington will be without starting quarterback Cyler Miles for its season opener at Hawaii.
Miles has been suspended for the opener, Huskies coach Chris Petersen said Thursday at Pac-12 Media Days. Miles, a sophomore, missed spring practice because he was suspended after being linked to two on-campus assaults in post-Super Bowl incidents; he was not charged in either incident. He was reinstated May 14.
"He's done everything right or he wouldn't be with us," Petersen said. "Guys make mistakes, certainly in that age range. I always say that age group is the dumbest group in America, it just happens to be so public a lot. Guys make mistakes and they learn from it.
"He's been through a lot and we'll reinforce that by missing a game. We are moving forward from that game forward."
Sophomore Jeff Lindquist or redshirt freshman Troy Williams likely will start against Hawaii. Truthfully, Washington would blast a bad Hawaii team with Petersen at quarterback.
Still, given Miles' lack of experience (he played in eight games last season, starting one), it hurts his development any time he misses game action. At the same time, the Huskies' other non-conference games are against Eastern Washington, Illinois and Georgia State, so Miles should have ample opportunity to get acclimated as the starter before the Huskies play host to Stanford on Sept. 27.
