Texas running back Joe Bergeron reportedly has been dismissed by coach Charlie Strong, making him the third player in two days to be kicked out of the program.
Orangebloods.com, a Rivals.com site that covers Texas, said Bergeron, a senior who had started seven games in his career, was dismissed for a violation of team rules. Its report said Bergeron could appeal the decision within the next 10 days.
Bergeron had been suspended for part of spring practice, but Strong said earlier this week at Big 12 Media Days that Bergeron was back in his good graces and would be part of a three-man group at tailback, along with Malcolm Brown and Jonathan Gray.
Bergeron (6-foot-1, 232 pounds) is a physical downhill runner who had five 100-yard games and 25 rushing touchdowns in his career.
Brown and Gray are expected to be Texas' top two tailbacks, but Bergeron would've played this fall. Brown rushed for 904 yards and Gray for 780 last season.
Thursday, Strong -- who was hired away from Louisville in January -- dismissed backup free safety Chevoski Collins and fourth-string tailback Jalen Overstreet for violating team rules. He also indefinitely suspended wide receivers Kendall Sanders and Montrel Meander after they were charged with sexual assault on Thursday. Sanders was a likely starter.
