Miami quarterback Kevin Olsen, a redshirt freshman in the running to start the Hurricanes' season-opening game, reportedly has been suspended.
Adam Kuperstein, an anchor for the NBC affiliate in south Florida, reported that Olsen -- the younger brother of Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen -- will be suspended for at least one game; Olsen also was suspended last season for the Russell Athletic Bowl, while he was redshirting.
Miami opens the season Sept. 1 at Louisville in the Cardinals' first-ever game as an ACC member.
Olsen (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) was expected to be UM's top backup this season, but when projected senior starter Ryan Williams tore his ACL during spring practice, Olsen suddenly was thrust into the spotlight. He didn't show all that well during the spring, though, and Miami announced in June that former BYU and Kansas quarterback Jake Heaps (6-1, 210) had transferred in.
If Olsen indeed has been suspended, that means the starting job will come down to Heaps and true freshman Brad Kaaya (6-4, 218). Kaaya, from the Los Angeles area, was a national top-150 recruit. His mom, Angela Means Kaaya, is an actress best-known for her role in the movie "Friday."
Heaps is a former mega-recruit who hasn't come close to living up to his high school hype. He is a good athlete who never has shown any consistency and has struggled to be an accurate passer.
