LSU will open fall camp without suspended standout defensive back Jalen Mills, Tigers coach Les Miles said Sunday.
Mills was suspended from the team after he was arrested in June for second-degree battery. A woman alleged Miles punched her in the mouth, but Mills' attorney said Mills was not the person who struck the victim. Police are still determining whether to bring formal charges against Mills.
Mills and freshman defensive lineman Travonte Valentine are the only players that won't be in attendance when LSU commences fall practice Monday, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Miles suggested earlier this week that Mills could eventually be cleared.
"I'm told everything's pretty positive," Miles said, per The Advocate of Baton Rouge, La. "It's a very unfortunate situation. Somebody came to his apartment and pursued him. It's unfortunate on both ends."
Mills (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) made 67 tackles and three interceptions last season at safety for the Tigers, and is considered among the SEC's most talented defensive backs. He played cornerback as a freshman in 2012, earning Freshman All-SEC honors in starting every game. Mills would be eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft if he opted to leave college after the season.
Valentine, an incoming consensus four-star recruit, has yet to receive certification from the NCAA Clearinghouse.
