The Dallas Cowboys expect to open their preseason voyage on Thursday without the services of starting quarterback Tony Romo.
"We've talked about it a little bit, and we're going to be smart," Romo told reporters on Sunday, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "... Most likely I'll probably sit out the San Diego (Chargers) game and play in Game 2 (against the Baltimore Ravens) and go from there."
Romo saw his largest workload of training camp on Sunday, tossing 25 passes in 7-on-7 and team drills after back-to-back days off.
The team has practice scheduled Monday and Tuesday, but Romo plans to sit out at least one of those sessions on the heels of his second back surgery in as many years.
'Boys fans need not panic (yet). Dallas is opting for an especially conservative approach with Romo, who called himself "100 percent" earlier this month.
The upside is more on-field reps for Brandon Weeden, the failed Browns passer notched at No. 2 after Kyle Orton's release. Still, if Dallas is forced to turn to the ginger for even more than a minute in the regular season, the Cowboys are in a world of trouble.
