Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Monday that the team would create a roster spot for defensive tackle Josh Brent if Brent is reinstated to play in the NFL.
"We wouldn't have it today but we will make a roster spot," Jones said.
The 26-year-old Brent was convicted in January of intoxication manslaughter for the December 2012 crash that killed Jerry Brown, a Cowboys practice squad player. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years' probation. He left jail last month and entered a rehab facility in Dallas.
Brent is now out of rehab and taking steps to resume his playing career. Because Brent retired last year, he has to apply for reinstatement, and could still face a suspension under the league's personal conduct policy.
Jones said Brent would be meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday. He said he would not try to influence Goodell to speed up the process.
"There's no place for input in my mind from the club asking to facilitate something that might be to the advantage of the club," Jones said. "This is about the behavior of the player, the player's behavior, the player's future and the NFL and our policies."
