New England wideout Brandon LaFell's "inconsistent hands" were an issue last month, but quarterback Tom Brady has seen progress in the former Carolina Panther, who admitted in July that his head was "spinning" as a new member of The Patriot Way.
"He keeps making more plays," Brady said Tuesday, per CSN New England. "He's understanding better and better. He's a veteran. He's savvy, knows how to run the routes, big body, big frame, makes a lot of tough catches."
Brady playfully pointed to LaFell's 6-foot-3 frame as a much-welcome anomaly to the, respectively, 5-foot-11 and 5-foot-10 duo of Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman.
"Absolutely. I've got some of the little pygmies out there like Julian and Danny and it's nice to have a little bigger guy out there from time to time who has a bigger catch radius," Brady said. "Hopefully Danny and Julian don't get mad at me for saying that. They won't. They know I'm joking."
LaFell, of course, was signed to compete with another 6-foot-3 pass-catcher in Aaron Dobson for the team's "X" wideout role, but Dobson remains missing in action with a foot ailment.
As a result, LaFell saw plenty of action in the first two days of this week's joint practices with the Redskins, catching nine of 12 targets, per the Boston Herald. Brady, though, continued to lean on Amendola and Edelman, with the latter dazzling onlookers by pulling down 16 of a team-leading 18 targets against Washington:
