The Heisman Trophy soon won't be the only Robert Griffin III hardware around the Baylor campus.
After taking the football program to new heights when he was on-campus, Baylor officials will unveil a new statue of the former Bears star for the team's opener against SMU on August 31. According to the Dallas Morning News, the Washington Redskins quarterback is expected to be in attendance for the unveiling of his statue.
There was some question as to whether Griffin would be able to make it Waco for the festivities surrounding his new likeness. Washington travels to Tampa Bay for an Aug. 28 preseason game against the Buccaneers before returning home to prepare for the 2014 opener at Houston.
Apparently a quick Sunday-night trip was fine with the organization's brass, and RG3 shouldn't miss too much time away from his current team.
News of the statue honoring Griffin first surfaced in early July, but images of the item are being kept under wraps until August 31st.
In addition to unveiling Griffin's new bust, the date marks the official opening for McLane Stadium. The $260 million venue is on campus and boasts amenities like Wi-Fi and a large jumbotron for a significant upgrade to the fan experience at Bears home games. It is expected to seat around 45,000.
Griffin won the school's first-ever Heisman Trophy while leading the team to a 10-win season back in 2011. He is widely credited for launching the program into an unprecedented (for the Bears at least) run of success that included a Big 12 title last year.
Baylor is ranked No. 9 in the College Football 24/7 Power Rankings.
