The Tennessean wondered this week if Bishop Sankey's "continued fumbling issues" will cost the rookie a major role in the Tennessee Titans' backfield early this season.
The second-round draft pick has dropped the ball in each of the two preseason games and has had problems with handoffs in practices, per the Tennessean.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt has no plans, however, to send Sankey to the doghouse as penance.
"He's not a fumbler, he was not that in college," Whisenhunt said, via 24/7 Sports' Terry McCormick. "It's technique things, it's footwork things where he hasn't gotten a lot of reps at those, and that can mess with you when you're trying to think about your footwork and not focusing on some of your other things."
As we pointed out Monday's edition of the Around The League Podcast, Sankey's biggest problem is with the depth chart rather than ball-security issues.
Yet to show that he can run with power between the tackles, he's behind Dexter McCluster in addition to Shonn Greene. The three backs will ultimately settle into a rotation based on down-and-distance, but Sankey doesn't appear to be headed for a major role in September.
The former Washington star was once viewed as a clear-cut favorite to lead all rookie running backs in touches. We've been more impressed by a pair of fourth-round picks in Andre Williams of the Giants and Devonta Freeman of the Falcons.
