It appears there is a new investigation into the North Carolina football program, which is no stranger to probes. This one doesn't involve the NCAA, though.

The university is investigating claims that redshirt freshman walk-on wide receiver Jackson Boyer suffered a concussion during a training camp hazing incident with teammates that escalated into a group assault, according to Yahoo! Sports.

"We are aware of an incident involving members of the UNC football team that took place earlier this month. We take this allegation seriously and the University is conducting a thorough review," Kevin Best, North Carolina's assistant athletic director for communications, told Yahoo! Sports in a statement.

The report states that the incident occurred during the first week of August at the hotel where the team stayed during fall camp.

Rob Boyer, Jackson's father, confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that an incident occurred involving his son but did not comment any further.

The university and the football program are already in the spotlight as the NCAA recently reopened its investigation into academic misconduct at the school. The Tar Heels were sanctioned by the Committee on Infractions in 2012 for violations stemming from improper benefits and academic misconduct and given a one-year bowl ban among other penalties.

University policy, according to Yahoo! Sports, prohibits hazing, "or any activity that puts a student's physical, emotional, or psychological health and safety at risk."

North Carolina opens the 2014 season on Saturday against Liberty. Head coach Larry Fedora has not addressed the allegations and there has been no announcement from the team regarding player discipline stemming from the alleged incident.
