Coach Steve Spurrier called Davis, who ran for 1,183 yards last season, "sort of doubtful" to play against the Pirates on his weekly Sunday teleconference. Davis (5-foot-9, 223 pounds) missed time during fall camp with a rib injury and re-aggravated the injury during the loss to the Aggies. He had 15 yards on six carries against A&M.
Spurrier said Davis' condition would be re-evaluated later this week and that Brandon Wilds was the most likely starter if Davis it out.
The Gamecocks' rushing attack was supposed to be a team strength, but South Carolina managed just 67 rushing yards against A&M. That number obviously needs to increase.
In other injury news:
» Colorado State offensive tackle Ty Sambrailo (6-7, 310), whom NFL Media senior draft analyst Gil Brandt said was a potential first-round pick in the 2015 draft, suffered an MCL injury in his right knee in the Rams' victory over Colorado on Friday night. Coach Jim McElwain said that the injury does not require surgery and that Sambrailo, who starts at left tackle, is expected back in three weeks. Colorado State lost starting RT Mason Hathaway for the season late in fall camp.
» Baylor QB Bryce Petty reportedly has two broken bones in his back and is listed as day-to-day; Petty has said he plans to play Saturday against FCS member Northwestern State (La.). But given the impact that losing Petty would have on the Bears' Big 12 title hopes, it seemingly would behoove the Bears' coaching staff to let him sit out this week and maybe even for the next game, too (at Buffalo, Sept. 13). Baylor should cruise in those contests even without Petty. Baylor is off Sept. 20.
» Nebraska junior DE Randy Gregory is doubtful for Saturday's game against FCS member McNeese State with an injured knee, and coach Bo Pelini said Gregory is considered "probable" for Fresno State on Sept. 13. As with Petty, though, it might be prudent to let Gregory sit for a while. He is Nebraska's best defensive player, and there would seem to be no reason to play Gregory in two games Nebraska should win without him.
» Alabama starting WR DeAndrew White (6-0, 190) suffered a shoulder injury in a win over West Virginia and will miss the next two weeks. Tide S Jarrick Williams (6-1, 215) will miss four weeks with a foot fracture. The Tide is significantly deeper at wide receiver than defensive back, so Williams' injury figures to be much more impactful. Williams plays in Alabama's oft-used nickel and dime situations. Alabama plays Florida Atlantic this week, and FAU could be without starting QB Jacquez Johnson and CB D'Joun Smith, its best defensive player. Both are questionable with shoulder injuries suffered in FAU's loss at Nebraska. Smith had seven interceptions, which tied for second nationally, and 13 pass breakups last season.
» Texas C Dominic Espinosa, a fifth-year senior who is in his fourth season as the starter, suffered a broken ankle in Texas' win over North Texas and seems likely to miss the rest of the season. Espinosa (6-4, 300) is considered a potential third-day draft pick.
» Iowa State junior WR Quenton Bundrage (6-2, 192) will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered on the first drive of Saturday's loss to FCS opponent North Dakota State. Bundrage is the Cyclones' best receiver, and his loss is a massive blow to an offense that lacks playmakers. Sophomore D'Vario Montgomery (6-5, 219) and true freshman Allen Lazard (6-5, 221) will look to replace Bundrage. Montgomery, a transfer from USF, was a high school teammate of QB Sam Richardson at Winter Park (Fla.) High, and their chemistry could be important going forward.
» Wisconsin DL Konrad Zagzebski (6-3, 278), who plays end and nose tackle, suffered a neck injury in Saturday night's loss to LSU. He was briefly hospitalized but was able to return home with the Badgers. Zagzebski could return for this week's game against FCS foe Western Illinois. Fellow DL Warren Herring (6-3, 294) suffered a knee injury against LSU and also is day-to-day.
» Michigan State G Travis Jackson (6-3, 286) reaggravated a back injury in a rout of Jacksonville State and is questionable for this week's game at Oregon. The Spartans' offensive line depth is an issue, and if Jackson can't play against the Ducks, true freshman Brian Allen likely would be the starter.
» Central Michigan WR Titus Davis (6-2, 190), the best player at his position in the MAC, has a knee injury that makes him doubtful for this week's game with Purdue. Davis is one of the best senior wide receivers nationally and might be the best senior wideout outside of the Power Five conferences.
