Everybody in the stadium -- and those watching at home -- could tell Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty was injured in his team's opening week win over SMU.
According to one report, the severity of Petty's injury is much worse than imagined.
CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd reported that Petty had an MRI done on Monday that showed, "bones sticking out from the spine that were cracked." A Baylor spokesperson later confirmed the diagnosis, adding the cracks were in the transverse processes in the quarterback's back.
Petty was hit by a defender on the first series of the game and appeared to be in noticeable pain the rest of the game, wincing quite a bit while on the field and spending his time on the sideline with trainers.
When asked why the team's star quarterback was still playing with the Bears up by several touchdowns, head coach Art Briles reportedly responded that Petty, "needed the reps."
"Right now, I can't sit down right, can't walk right," Petty told CBS Sports. "Every time I went to throw it would jolt. It just felt like somebody was punching me in my side."
Petty threw for 161 yards on 13-of-23 passing with two touchdowns in the first half on Sunday. He added two rushes for 21 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Baylor did not practice on Monday but will hit the field on Tuesday to prepare for a home game against Northwestern State. Petty added he expects to play in the game.
The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season, Petty is considered a top candidate for the Heisman Trophy this year and a possible first-round NFL Draft pick in the spring.
