Trey Smith, the son of former Jacksonville JaguarsPro Bowl wide receiver Jimmy Smith, has committed to play for Louisville.
Smith (6-foot-1, 200 pounds), from Madison (Miss.) Central, is a running back and slot receiver. He will play for Bobby Petrino at Louisville, and his dad is well-acquainted with Petrino, who was an assistant with the Jaguars from 1999-2001.
Petrino was the Jaguars' offensive coordinator in 2001, when Jimmy Smith had 112 receptions -- second-most in the league that season -- for 1,373 yards and eight touchdowns. Petrino was the Jaguars' quarterback coach in 1999 and 2000.
Smith attended Louisville's victory over Miami on Monday night and committed to the Cardinals on Tuesday. He also had an offer from Mississippi State.
"My dad played under Coach Petrino when he was with the Jaguars," Trey Smith told cardinalsports.com, a Louisville-centric website, in May. "My dad has been talking to me a lot about how great of a coach and what a great mind he has on the offensive side of the ball."
Louisville's secondary coach is former NFL cornerback Terrell Buckley, and he was Smith's main recruiter.
Jimmy Smith, 45, played for Jackson (Miss.) Callaway High and Jackson State before moving on to the NFL.
