The Indianapolis Colts have received crushing news on their biggest defensive star.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that linebacker Robert Mathis is out for the season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon, according to two sources informed of the situation.
ProFootballTalk first reported that Mathis suffered the injury while working out on his own in Atlanta. Mathis is in the middle of a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
The loss is a potentially crippling blow to a Colts defense that struggled to produce a pass rush in their 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. Mathis' 19.5 sacks last season led the NFL.
Colts coach Chuck Pagano was understandably despondent when discussing the impact of Mathis' injury during Monday's news conference.
"We hate to lose anybody," Pagano said, per ESPN's Mike Wells. "A devastating blow for Robert, the team."
Mathis is now tasked with coming back from a serious leg injury with his 34th birthday on the horizon. Andrew Luck, meanwhile, can safely expect to be in more shootouts than originally anticipated. The Colts' defense just got significantly worse.
