Perhaps Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen ought to just let Jameon Lewis keep throwing passes until one of them doesn't go for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs wide receiver threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Dak Prescott to finish a nifty double pass as MSU knocked off South Alabama, 35-3, on Saturday. But it shouldn't have come as too much of a surprise to the Jaguars, because Lewis was 3 for 3 as a passer with three touchdowns last season.
For his career, the wide receiver's track record as a quarterback on trick plays is nothing short of perfection: Four attempts, four completions, four touchdowns, totaling 108 yards. His career passer rating now stands at a staggering 656.8. And it actually fell with Saturday's throw.
Apparently, Lewis' role as a passer has never left the playbook. And why should it?
Lewis brings a dangerous do-it-all element to the Mississippi State offense, not only as a receiver and part-time quarterback, but as a rusher on end-around plays, too. The senior gave some consideration to entering the NFL draft as an underclassman, but opted to return to MSU for one more season, and at least one more touchdown pass.
