Johnny Manziel made his debut Sunday, and it wasn't much of a story. Perhaps that was the biggest upset of all in a wild Week 2.
Manziel came in for only three plays in the Browns' win over New Orleans. He handed off on two of them. He took a while to release the ball on his one throw, a pass to fullback Ray Agew, who dropped the pass after a jarring hit.
Brian Hoyer was told about the plan during the week.
"If it's going to help us win, I'm all for it," Hoyer said via NFL Media's Aditi Kinkhabwala.
Still, Hoyer wasn't thrilled about the notion when he first learned about it, admitting he was "mad."
"I think as a competitor and as a quarterback, when there's only one of you on the field, it's hard for you to get taken off," Hoyer said via the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "But I think for me, I was mentally able to stay in it. I think a lot of guys might not be able to handle that, and I think because they were up front with me, (offensive coordinator) Kyle (Shanahan) was up front with me, and said, 'Look, we may do it. We may not. If we need to use it, we might.' I think that helped me."
Hoyer was erratic during the game, especially in the first half. But he played his best on the team's game-winning drive and the Browns offense has put up plenty of points the last two weeks despite a raft of injuries. In short: Hoyer should have this job for a while, and we really don't see the point in mixing in Manziel for a few plays at a time.
