Count West Virginia's Kevin White among college wide receivers gaining momentum as prospects for the 2015 NFL Draft. After a hot start to the season, the Mountaineers' senior has drawn the attention of both NFL Media analysts and former Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage.
"For the NFL, he is a legit potential starter as an X (split end) because of his physical traits and is a player that should only improve in the future," Savage wrote in his latest scouting report for the Reese's Senior Bowl. Meanwhile, in College Football 24/7's latest edition of "Sources Tell Us," scouts have gone so far as to liken White to eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals. An NFL personnel director stopped short of that, but said he could at least understand the comparison.
White has the kind of size (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) needed to handle the X position, which more often requires a receiver to break away from press coverage. Noted Savage, "He has a physical stride coming off the line of scrimmage and the upper-body strength to beat corners and gain position on intermediate patterns."
His production this season has been outstanding through three games. He has amassed 32 receptions, which ranks second in the NCAA behind Alabama's Amari Cooper, and 460 receiving yards, which also ranks second in the entire nation behind Baylor's KD Cannon. White is a senior, so 2014 represents his last chance to show NFL scouts what he can do in game action. Given that he's already just three catches away from matching his season total from last year, it is clear that he is taking full advantage thus far.
