Vernon Davis is inactive for the San Francisco 49ers' Week 3 tussle with the Arizona Cardinals.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that it was unlikely Davis would play in the NFC West bout due to a bruised ankle, according to a source informed of the tight end's injury.
The team later announced that Davis was inactive.
Davis was on crutches until Thursday, per Rapoport.
The tight end was listed as a game-time decision on the 49ers' injury report after suffering an ankle injury in the second half of last week's loss to the Chicago Bears. Davis did not return to the game.
It will be a big blow for the 49ers' offense if the tight end doesn't suit up. Davis is one of Colin Kaepernick's favorite and most reliable targets. The pass-catcher is also one of the NFL's best red-zone threats.
With Davis and fellow tight end Vance McDonald both listed as questionable, the Niners announced Saturday they signed rookie Asante Cleveland off the practice squad.
