The Green Bay Packers' offense has waded into uncharted waters.
On paper everything looks grand: Aaron Rodgers is back and healthy. Jordy Nelson is paid and happy, Randall Cobb is injury-free, Eddie Lacy should be better in his second season.
On the field Sunday, however, it looked anything but grand in a 19-7 loss to the Detroit Lions. In fact, it looked down right anemic.
"Our defense played their butts off tonight," Cobb said of a defense that caused three turnovers, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "We did nothing for them. It was kind of embarrassing as an offense, embarrassing myself the way I played."
As we discussed on Sunday's episode of the Around The NFL Podcast, it was curious that Cobb -- three catches for 29 yards -- couldn't take advantage of the Lions' defensive backs -- one of whom was literally picked up off the street last week.
Detroit's defense rolled coverage toward Nelson, but Cobb couldn't create separation to take advantage.
The Packers got no help from other wideouts, either. Jarrett Boykin caught one pass for 11 yards and rookie Davante Adams caught two passes for 11. Underwhelming tight end Andrew Quarless was the team's second-best target behind Nelson on Sunday with four catches for 43 yards.
Rodgers didn't play great and missed several throws. He also got zero aid from his receivers. Nelson is a top-10 NFL wideout, but no pass-catcher can do it alone.
It's early in the season, but the Packers' offense could warrant some shakeup -- activating speedy rookie Jeff Janis over unproductive Boykin is one option. Whether or not any moves are made, Cobb understands there is one simple solution:
"I have to look myself in the mirror and do a better job of creating separation and getting open and giving Aaron somewhere to throw the ball," he said. "We just didn't play well. It comes down to it. We got embarrassed."
