Oklahoma State's 45-35 win over Texas Tech on Thursday night was nothing if not entertaining for most fans considering there was more than 1,000 yards of total offense in the contest.
However, for those that root for Texas Tech, the loss was nothing but concerning. As if the defense getting torched deep time after time wasn't bad enough, starting quarterback Davis Webb left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury and failed to return to action.
Team doctors would not allow Webb to play after he was taken into the locker room, according to a sideline report from the ESPN broadcast of the game. Red Raiders radio network sideline reporter Chris Level later reported Webb suffered a dislocated shoulder on his non-throwing arm.
Prior to his injury, Webb basically was the entire Texas Tech offense. He finished the night 35-for-54, with 374 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
The signal-caller was later seen encouraging teammates on the sidelines and coaching backup Patrick Mahomes, a true freshman.
The 6-foot-5, 209-pound Webb was expected to challenge Baylor's Bryce Petty and Oklahoma's Trevor Knight for first-team All-Big 12 honors this year. The sophomore led Texas Tech to an upset win over a highly ranked Arizona State team in the Holiday Bowl last season and was seen by many as one of the rising stars at the quarterback position after a stint as a college counselor at the Elite 11 quarterback competition over the summer.
The Cowboys know all too well what it's like to operate with a backup quarterback as they played their second game without former starter J.W. Walsh, who is out for the season after having surgery. Daxx Garman ended up throwing two interceptions on Thursday but still had a solid game, posting 370 yards through the air and scoring five total touchdowns.
Oklahoma State speedster Tyreek Hill had a relatively quiet night by his standards. Considered one of the fastest players in college football, Hill scored on a 50-yard bomb but was held to less than 100 yards of total offense on just nine touches.
The 24th-ranked Cowboys walked away with a key Big 12 win on Thursday night but the real story came on the opposing sidelines with the health of Webb's shoulder being a key storyline going forward for Texas Tech.
