Brandon Harris outplays Anthony Jennings in LSU win

As much as LSU head coach Les Miles continues to be coy about his plans for the quarterback position, there was nothing coy about how he used the duo of Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings on Saturday night.

The freshman Harris, by every indication, is taking over the job.

Harris completed 11 of 14 passes for 178 yards, including three touchdowns, in a 63-7 trouncing of New Mexico State. He also added 36 yards rushing and two more touchdowns on the ground, flashing the sort of dual-threat talent that made him a four-star recruit rated as the nation's No. 5 quarterback out of high school.

Jennings certainly did his part to end the competition, throwing as many interceptions (two) as he had completions. Jennings, a sophomore, has started every game this season, including Saturday, but Miles never established him as the clear choice at the position. Now, it appears Harris is the clear choice.

If Harris earns his first career start next week, the task will be a daunting one for a freshman: at Auburn. But Jennings' play has been too inconsistent to expect him to win at Auburn. Harris came off the bench to lead LSU's comeback attempt in a 34-29 loss to Mississippi State last week.

More than likely, his days as a relief pitcher are finished.
