The New England Patriots' offense has been a simmering a pot of rotten stew for weeks and it finally boiled over Monday night in a 41-14, three-turnover pasting by the Kansas City Chiefs.
However, it wasn't just the offense that got lambasted in prime time. The Pats' defense entered the week allowing just 16.3 points per game (ranking T-4th), 272.7 yards of total offense (3rd) and led the NFL in fewest passing yards allowed at 168.7.
By halftime the Alex Smith and the Chiefs had blown those stats out of the water.
"We were always out of the game, it seemed," veteran Vince Wilfork said, per the Providence Journal. "We knew they feel comfortable playing from ahead. We knew it was going to be tough. We took one on the chin. They beat us like we stole something. It's pretty bad, but we have to correct mistakes and move forward. This is a short week. We will watch the film and hopefully we never have this feeling again, because it sucks to have this feeling. We knew it was going to be a tough game. They basically destroyed us."
The Chiefs did Monday what three other teams failed to do: Take advantage of a defensive group that collectively looks old and slow.
