Maryland star wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been suspended from the Terrapins' next game, Nov. 15 against Michigan State, for his actions before last Saturday's win over Penn State.
The Big Ten announced the suspension Monday afternoon, saying Diggs violated the Big Ten's sportsmanship policy.
Various media reports said Diggs touched an official in the face during a fracas before the game. But Diggs was not ejected and led Maryland with six receptions for 53 yards, and he also returned kicks and punts.
In addition to suspending Diggs, the league issued a public reprimand of Maryland coach Randy Edsall, saying Edsall failed to control his team before the game, when Terps players initiated a confrontation with Penn State players. The league said, "Officials did a good job of containing the situation once it started, and fortunately the incident did not escalate any further."
The league office also addressed the decision by Maryland captains to not shake hands with Penn State captains before the coin toss, calling the move "exceptionally regrettable."
Maryland won 20-19 in State College, Pa., when Brad Craddock hit a 43-yard field goal with 51 seconds left.
Edsall opened his postgame news conference Saturday by apologizing for the fracas. "Our emotions got the best of us, and we've got to be above that," he told reporters. He also said he did not know his captains were not going to shake hands.
Diggs' suspension robs Maryland of its best player for the Michigan State game. He is second in the league with 52 receptions, fifth with 654 receiving yards and tied for fifth with five receiving touchdowns.
