Indiana tailback Tevin Coleman's streak of 100-yard games ended at 10 Saturday, and he also lost his national rushing lead in a 13-7 loss to Penn State.
Coleman was held to 71 yards on 20 carries, and 17 of those yards came on one third-quarter carry.
Coleman (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) had been averaging 162.5 yards per game; that figure dropped a bit more than 10 yards, to 152.3. His production has dropped of late because of season-ending injuries to IU's top two quarterbacks, and true freshman quarterback Zander Diamont -- who had been expected to redshirt -- has passed for 103 yards combined in the past three games, including 68 against Penn State.
Coleman had 11 TD runs in the first six games of the season, but he hasn't reached the end zone in the past three games. IU coaches tried to get Coleman involved in the passing game, and he did have four catches -- but for minus-8 yards. Coleman's receiving ability has drawn notice from NFL scouts, and while he is struggling a bit of late, the circumstances and reasons certainly are well-known.
Indiana finished with 221 total yards; Penn State had 330, with 92 coming on a TD run by tailback Bill Belton late in the second quarter. The teams combined to go 7-of-34 on third downs; they also punted a combined 20 times.
