No. 1 overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney hasn't made much of an impact on the field in three games since returning from his knee injury. Now he could be on the sidelines once again.
Clowney told reporters Thursday he suffered a setback last week and indicated he would have a slim chance of playing Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Texans coach Bill O'Brien didn't sound amused upon learning Clowney's comments.
"I don't know. Dr. Clowney, I'll reconvene with him and see how he's doing," O'Brien said.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier this month that Texans coaches were frustrated with Clowney for not returning as soon as hoped from injury. They were hoping to see more "maturity" of him. O'Brien disputed the notion that Clowney had a setback.
"He's improved, no question about it. He's definitely improved. He'll keep getting better and better, the more experienced that he gets," O'Brien said.
Despite J.J. Watt's incredible season, the Texans' defense has taken a big step back this season. Romeo Crennel has been a downgrade at coordinator from Wade Phillips, and Clowney hasn't been healthy enough to make an impact.
