Philip Rivers led the San Diego Chargers back from a 21-point deficit to a 38-35 overtime victory Saturday night over the San Francisco 49ers.
He did that with a bulging disc in his back.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via two sources close to the player, that Rivers has been playing with a bulging disc in his back that flared up two to three ago and necessitated emergency outside treatment. It was bad enough that he considered shutting it down.
ESPN first reported the news.
Offseason surgery is possible for Rivers, Rapoport added. Meanwhile, the quarterback's fractured ribs have gotten better.
The Chargers kept their playoff hopes alive with Saturday's win. With any luck, Rivers will put off the surgery decision a few more weeks.
