West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett is retiring from football just before the team's Liberty Bowl appearance against Texas A&M due to a series of concussions. Trickett said he has endured five concussions in a 14-month stretch and hid two of them from WVU trainers, according to wvmetronews.com's Allen Taylor.

"In the career I'm entering I probably need a few brain cells," Trickett reportedly said. As for his decision to keep two of the concussions to himself, Trickett added, "In fairness to our trainers, that's on me."

Trickett later took to Twitter to thank Mountaineers fans for their support.

WVU coach Dana Holgorsen said backup Skyler Howard would start against the Aggies.

Trickett plans to start a career as a coach. His father, Rick Trickett, is the Florida State offensive line coach. Trickett passed for 3,285 yards this season, including seven consecutive 300-yard games to start the year. His production tailed off toward the end of the season as he threw five interceptions and only one touchdown pass during a season-ending three-game losing streak.
