Minnesota third-year sophomore Maxx Williams might have come up on the losing end of the Citrus Bowl, as the Golden Gophers fell Thursday to Missouri, 33-17, but he erased whatever doubts there might have been about whether he is one college football's elite tight ends.
Williams caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in what is expected to be his final college game; he will reportedly enter the 2015 NFL Draft as an underclassman. His day wasn't without a flare for the spectacular, either. Williams hurdled a defender on a 54-yard touchdown catch that will make Minnesota highlight reels for years.
Williams also delivered an outstanding block to spring running back Rodrick Williams on a 20-yard touchdown run for the Golden Gophers' only other touchdown Thursday.
Missouri defensive ends Shane Ray and Markus Golden were among the other top prospects in the game. Golden was credited with a pair of sacks in the senior's final college game. Golden reached double-digit sacks for the year at 10.5, as Missouri broke a school record for sacks in a single season.
Ray, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year with 14 sacks, has yet to announce whether he will enter the NFL draft as a junior.
