Does anyone else think the Browns' offensive coordinator search is heading off the tracks a bit?
With all conventional candidates either passing on the gig or floating in a coaching purgatory, the team recently interviewed Mike Martz, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday morning, per two sources.
Martz, who is 63, has been out of football since 2011. His last coaching gig was with the Bears as an offensive coordinator, which ended a string of jobs where he was unable to recapture the magic displayed by the Greatest Show On Turf.
In fact, Martz did not have a team finish in the top 20 in total yards in any of his other stints.
Still, Martz has plenty of knowledge and we always discuss what coaching candidates can learn from time off. Could this be the case here?
Coaches look at the 1999 St. Louis Rams as the picture of a modern offense. Several around the league covet the practice tapes of Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Az-Zahir Hakim and Ricky Proehl working in sync with one another and marvel about how the ball almost never hit the ground.
But that was a unit with unbelievable talent and a very special quarterback. Martz would need to come in and do the same with Johnny Manziel.
As new names keep surfacing, it has to be fair to wonder where the fine line between due diligence and a frantic search to get someone in place is drawn.
