The St. Louis Rams will apparently stay in-house to select their next offensive coordinator.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that St. Louis is expected to promote quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti to offensive coordinator, according to a source informed of the decision. Cignetti will replace Brian Schottenheimer, who left the team for a job at the University of Georgia. The team plans to formally announce the move next week.
Cignetti has been the Rams quarterbacks coach for three seasons and was one of Jeff Fisher's original hires when he took the St. Louis job in 2012.
Cignetti has never been an offensive coordinator at the NFL level, but he has served in the position for several college teams, most recently Rutgers in 2011. He inherits a Rams offense that ranked 21st, 21st and 25th in scoring in Schottenheimer's three seasons running the show.
