Rex Ryan might have solved his quarterback issue earlier than expected.
Josh McCown is visiting with the Bills on Monday, the team announced.
A deal is not imminent at this point, and it's the first of a few visits planned for the signal-caller, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source who has spoken to McCown. NFL Media's Albert Breer added that McCown's meeting with Buffalo finished with no deal in place, per a source apprised of the proceedings.
The move should be seen as a wise one for Ryan, who slogged through all six seasons in New York without a reliable option under center. McCown, like Kyle Orton before him, will be more than capable of moving that Buffalo offense and highlighting some of its budding talent.
Though McCown will hit 36 before opening day 2015, his playing age is much younger. Aside from the 2014 season in Tampa, one doomed from the start following the departure of offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, McCown has only started more than 10 games in a season one other time in his career (2004, Arizona).
Of course, Ryan will not be able to escape a quarterback competition during his first training camp if McCown ends up signing a deal. The constant lack of stability was something that undermined his offenses with the Jets throughout the years and having a potential battle between McCown and E.J. Manuel won't make things any easier.
Still, Ryan is showing he's not afraid to strengthen the position as much as possible.
