Robert Mathis hopes to rejoin Colts for OTAs

The Indianapolis Colts could have pass rusher Robert Mathis back on the field for spring practices.

Agent Hadley Engelhard has assured NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that Mathis' rehab from a September Achilles' tendon tear is going fine and there has been no setback.

Mathis is still hoping to participate in at least a portion of OTAs, per Rapoport.

Engelhard's comments come in response to a report from ESPN.com that Mathis had suffered a slight setback in his recovery.

Although advances in Achilles surgery and rehabilitation have allowed players to expedite their recovery timelines over the past half-decade, it's often another season before they regain their pre-injury explosiveness.

That's a concern for Mathis, who turns 34 years old later this month.

The bottom line is that it's too early to project Mathis as the same player he was prior to the injury.
