Chiefs' Mike DeVito willing to join free-agent market

Mike DeVito could very well join the free-agent market soon.

The versatile veteran defensive end/tackle, who tore his Achilles during a Week 1 matchup against the Titans, will likely be asked to take a pay cut in order to remain on the roster, according to multiple league sources familiar with the situation.

DeVito, 30, is scheduled to make $4 million in 2015. But after several inquiries from other clubs at the combine, he might feel like he could get the same on the open market.

Before his injury, DeVito was viewed as the No. 7 3-4 defensive end in football, by Pro Football Focus. In 2012, his final year with the Jets, he graded out 12th among ends.

With the market for a player at a similar age and position already heating up -- according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, Ricky Jean Francoishas visits lined up with the Redskins and 49ers -- a fully healed DeVito may be right to take a calculated gamble, especially with many run defense-needy teams out there with money to spend.
